I was simply trying to concisely state exactly what Scripture states...which doesn't explicitly speak to democracies since democracies didn't exist then. How blessed we are to live in a constitutional democratic republic!Mike Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15110766015986027375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247013562221934777.post-69739361678396545202009-01-21T12:26:00.000-05:002009-01-21T12:26:00.000-05:00A hearty "Amen," with one caveat: in my view, in the United States our governmental authority is NOT a President, Congressman or any other individual, agency or branch of our government; it is a Constitution through which our government derives its power from the consent of the governed and gives us both the right and responsibility to be active participants in our system of government. As you have said, I believe we are called to pray for our leaders, honor our leaders and the office they hold, and to submit to the laws of the land. However, I do not believe our civic calling as Christians ends there. We also have a calling to be responsible stewards of our freedom by engaging in the civic process. In the case of our new president, I believe we should be willing to support the administration’s policies when possible, and we must be willing to respectfully speak out against its proposed policies when necessary and appropriate.
